က / သည်

The Subject in Writing

Level 4

One sentence can hold သည် twice: after the subject and at the end.

How It Works

Speech marks the doer with က, or leaves it bare. Writing puts သည် after the topic of the sentence, then says something about it.

SpokenWrittenEnglish
ဆရာက စာအုပ်ရေးခဲ့တယ်။ဆရာသည် စာအုပ်ရေးသားခဲ့သည်။The teacher wrote a book.
ရန်ကုန်က မြို့ကြီးပါ။ရန်ကုန်သည် မြို့ကြီး ဖြစ်သည်။Yangon is a big city.
ကိုကို ဆရာဝန်ပါ။ကိုကိုသည် ဆရာဝန် ဖြစ်သည်။Ko Ko is a doctor.

Subject သည် fits facts, definitions and descriptions, so textbooks are full of it. These sentences end in ဖြစ်သည် (is) or ရှိသည် (there is, has).

Writing keeps က too. News uses it for the speaker before a verb of saying, and for a doer that is new or stressed: ဝန်ကြီးက ပြောကြားသည် (the minister said).

One noun takes one marker: သည် or က, never both. The same word သည် ends the sentence too, so a written sentence can open and close with it.

Formal writing has its own word for "I" and "we": ကျွန်ုပ် and ကျွန်ုပ်တို့, which suit men and women alike. For people, the written classifier is ဦး: ဆရာမ တစ်ဦး (a teacher).
