Folk Song Forms
Bhojpuri folk songs follow the seasons: कजरी, फगुआ, चइता and बिरहा.
How It Works
Bhojpuri songs come in types, and each type has its own time of year or feeling.
| Song | When or what |
|---|---|
| कजरी | the rains (सावन) |
| फगुआ | Holi, in the month of Phagun |
| चइता | spring (चइत) |
| बिरहा | longing, being apart |
People sing them in groups, with drums and cymbals. The words use older forms: मोर and तोर for my and your, -वा and -इया endings, calls like हो रामा, and an -इ on some verbs.
The names are used with the verb गावल (to sing): कजरी गावल जाला. You can recognise each type by its season word: सावन, फागुन, चइत.
