करऽ / आवऽ
Telling a Friend to Do Something
Come here is इहाँ आवऽ; the ऽ is the sign of a command to तू.
How It Works
The command to a friend, a sibling or a child is the stem plus ऽ. The ऽ is written, but the sound is just a short final a.
| Verb | Command | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| आवल | आवऽ | come |
| करल | करऽ | do |
| पढ़ल | पढ़ऽ | read |
| देखल | देखऽ | look |
| बइठल | बइठऽ | sit |
| देल | दऽ | give |
| लेल | लऽ | take |
| जाइल | जा | go |
To say please, add तनी: तनी पानी दऽ। To say not to do something, put मत before the command: मत जा।
For a verb that takes ऽ, dropping it (कर, बइठ) gives the तें command, used only with small children and very close family. करऽ is gentler than that. The command to a respected person ends in -ीं instead: बइठीं, आईं. Use the right one, because तू to an elder sounds rude.
