हो रामा
Song Refrains
Folk songs fill out their lines with calls like हो रामा and रे.
How It Works
Calls give the singer space to breathe and the listeners a note to join. They do not change the grammar. If you take them out, the sentence still stands.
| Call | Where |
|---|---|
| हो रामा | end of a line, in कजरी |
| रे | end of a line, calling a friend |
| हो | soft call |
| ए सखी | calling a friend |
The name Rama in हो रामा is not a prayer in every song. It is often just the refrain. In the rains (सावन), women sing कजरी on swings, and the refrain marks each line.
When you read or sing, read the line without the call, then add it back.

- झूला पड़ल बा डार पर हो रामा।

- सावन आइल रे, घटा छाइल रे।

रे after each part.
- कजरी गावऽ सखिया हो रामा।
Sing a kajri, friend, oh Rama.
The refrain follows a command.
