Reading Bhojpuri in Devanagari
Bhojpuri is written in Devanagari, with a few marks that show how a word is said.
How It Works
Bhojpuri uses the same Devanagari script as Hindi. Each consonant carries a short a unless a vowel sign replaces it: क is ka, का is kaa, कि is ki.
Three marks matter for Bhojpuri.
- ऽ (avagraha) sits after a letter and keeps a short a that is said. In करऽ (do!) and तू जालऽ (you go), the last a is heard. Without it, the last a of a word is silent: कर is kar, करऽ is kara.
- श and ष are both said like स. Write the usual spelling, such as शहर or देश, and say it with s.
- ँ makes the vowel nasal: गाँव (village), साँझ (evening), हाँ (yes).
| Written | Said | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| करऽ | kara | do (to a friend) |
| शहर | sahar | city |
| गाँव | gaanv (nasal aa) | village |
End a statement with the danda । and a question with ?.
Examples (5)
You do the work.
The ऽ after कर keeps the last a: kara.
Sit down comfortably.
बइठऽ ends in ऽ, so the final a is said.
My city is Chhapra.
शहर is written with श but said sahar.
He went to the village in the morning.
गाँव has a nasal vowel, and सबेरे is written with स.
Where do you go?
The -लऽ ending of a friendly तू verb takes ऽ.
