गइल / गइली

The Simple Past: -ल and -ली

Level 2Sounds Like ga'ila ā ga'ilī

गइल is he went, गइली is she went.

How It Works

VerbMan or thingWoman
जाइल goगइलगइली
आवल comeआइलअइली
सुतल sleepसुतलसुतली
पहुँचल arriveपहुँचलपहुँचली

जाइल becomes गइल and आवल becomes आइल. Before the ending -ली, the आ of आइल becomes अ, so you get अइली.

This past follows the subject, not an object. Verbs that take an object, such as खाइल (eat), use a different ending for he, taught next.

Respected people and groups use another ending, -लें: बाबूजी गइलें. For हम and रउआ it is -नी: हम गइनी. For तू it is -लऽ or -लू.
