कितीही … तरी

No Matter How

Level 5Sounds Like kitīhī … tarī

कितीही never changes, and तरी comes after the first part.

How It Works

Put कितीही before the word that has an amount in it. कितीही प्रयत्न केला तरी दार उघडले नाही. (No matter how hard we tried, the door would not open.)

First part with कितीहीAfter तरी
पाऊस कितीही पडलातरी शाळा सुरू राहील.
कितीही पैसे दिलेतरी ते घर मिळणार नाही.
मी कितीही दमलोतरी रोज चालायला जातो.

कितीही goes before a noun, an adjective or a verb. It does not take a gender ending. A man says मी कितीही दमलो तरी रोज चालायला जातो. A woman says मी कितीही दमले तरी रोज एक पान वाचते.

कितीही also goes with an adjective: कितीही मोठा खर्च आला तरी काम थांबणार नाही. (However big the cost, the work will not stop.)

The second part often says that nothing changes, or that the result goes against what one expects. कितीही पैसे दिले तरी ते घर मिळणार नाही.

Use तरी, not तर. तर would make it a plain condition and would change the meaning.

The same pattern exists with other question words: कोणीही, काहीही, कुठेही, कधीही.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi form कितना भी.

    कितना भी प्रयत्न केला तरी दार उघडले नाही.
    कितीही प्रयत्न केला तरी दार उघडले नाही.

कितना is Hindi. Marathi says कितीही.

  • Using तर in the place of तरी.

    कितीही प्रयत्न केला तर दार उघडले नाही.
    कितीही प्रयत्न केला तरी दार उघडले नाही.

तर means "then". तरी means "all the same", and this pattern needs it.
