Counting to Ten

Level 1Sounds Like ēka / dōna / tīna

The numbers from one to ten are एक, दोन, तीन, चार, पाच, सहा, सात, आठ, नऊ and दहा.

How It Works

DigitWordDigitWord
१एक६सहा
२दोन७सात
३तीन८आठ
४चार९नऊ
५पाच१०दहा

The number goes before the noun. After a number above one, the noun is plural: तीन खोल्या, दहा मुले. After एक it stays singular: एक खोली.

With a measure word such as कप (cup), only the measure word follows the number, and the thing measured stays in its plain form: दोन कप चहा (two cups of tea), तीन ग्लास पाणी (three glasses of water).

Bigger numbers follow the same pattern: अकरा, बारा and वीस work like दहा.

एक also means a or an: मला एक चहा हवा. The Hindi numbers दो, छह, नौ and दस are not Marathi: use दोन, सहा, नऊ and दहा.

    इथे सहा माणसे आहेत.

छह is Hindi. Marathi says सहा.
