जितका … तितका

The More … the More

Level 5Sounds Like jitakā … titakā

The two halves can be bare nouns, which gives short sayings, or full clauses, which gives longer statements.

How It Works

जितका … तितका compares two amounts. Because both words describe a noun, they take its gender and number, just as चांगला does.

MasculineFeminineNeuter
Singularजितका / तितकाजितकी / तितकीजितके / तितके
Pluralजितके / तितकेजितक्या / तितक्याजितकी / तितकी

Check each half on its own. In जितका सराव, तितके यश, सराव is masculine and यश is neuter, so the two words differ.

Plural nouns need plural forms: in जितके लोक येतील, तितका उत्साह वाढेल, लोक is masculine plural, so जितके, and उत्साह is masculine singular, so तितका.

The halves can be a bare phrase: जितकी मेहनत, तितकी प्रगती. They can also be full clauses: जितकी मेहनत घ्याल, तितकी प्रगती होईल.

When the amount is an action, use जितके जास्त or जितके अधिक with the neuter ending: जितके अधिक मी शिकले, तितके माझे अज्ञान मला जाणवले.

The Hindi pair जितना … उतना looks close but is wrong in Marathi, where the second word is तितका.
