जर … तर

Open Conditions

Level 4Sounds Like jara … tara

For a future event, the verb after जर is often in the past form, as in जर पाऊस आला.

How It Works

जर … तर says "if … then". The condition comes first, then a comma, then तर and the result.

Condition (जर)Result (तर)
जर पाऊस आला,तर आपण घरी थांबू.
जर तुला वेळ असेल,तर मला फोन कर.
जर तुम्ही लवकर निघालात,तर वेळेवर पोहोचाल.

A surprising point: for something that may happen later, the verb after जर often has the past form. जर पाऊस आला means "if rain comes". It does not talk about the past. With असणे the verb is असेल: जर तुला वेळ असेल. (If you have time.)

The result clause uses the future, the present or an order: तर थांबू, तर पोहोचतो, तर फोन कर.

Marathi often drops जर in speech and keeps तर: पाऊस आला तर आपण थांबू. Writing both is clearer, and it suits lessons and formal writing.

For a negative condition, put नाही after the verb: जर पाऊस आला नाही, तर आपण जाऊ. (If it doesn't rain, we'll go.)

Examples (5)

  1. जर पाऊस आला, तर आपण घरी थांबू.

If it rains, we'll stay home.

आला is the past form for a possible future event.

  2. जर तुला वेळ असेल, तर मला फोन कर.

If you have time, call me.

असेल is the condition, and the result is an order.

  3. जर तुम्ही लवकर निघालात, तर वेळेवर पोहोचाल.

If you leave early, you'll arrive on time.

निघालात is the तुम्ही form; पोहोचाल is the future result.

  4. जर मला नोकरी मिळाली, तर मी पुण्याला राहायला जाईन.

If I get a job, I'll move to Pune.

मिळाली agrees with नोकरी, and जाईन is the result.

  5. जर आजीची तब्येत ठीक असेल, तर आम्ही रविवारी येऊ.

If Grandma is well, we'll come on Sunday.

असेल gives the condition, and येऊ gives the result.

Common Mistakes
