आहे / आहेस / आहोत / आहात / आहेत
Being Something or Somewhere
The same verb means is, am, are and there is, so आहे also says that something exists.
How It Works
Marathi has no separate words for am, is and are. One verb has these forms.
| Doer | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| मी, तो, ती, ते (it) | आहे | मी आहे. |
| तू | आहेस | तू आहेस. |
| आम्ही, आपण (we) | आहोत | आम्ही आहोत. |
| तुम्ही | आहात | तुम्ही आहात. |
| ते, त्या, plural nouns | आहेत | मुले आहेत. |
The verb goes at the end of the sentence. Use आहे also for existence: घरात पाणी आहे means There is water in the house.
For a respected person, use आहेत: बाबा घरी आहेत.
To ask a question, add का: तू तयार आहेस का? The form of आहे stays the same.
