काही / कोणी / सगळे

Some, Someone and All

Level 2Sounds Like kāhī / kōṇī / sagaḷē

सगळा, सगळी, सगळे and सगळ्या agree with the noun, like चांगला, चांगली, चांगले.

How It Works

काही means some or any: काही मुले (some children), तुला काही हवे आहे का? (Do you want anything?)

कोणी is for people only: घरात कोणी आहे का? (Is anyone home?)

सगळे means all. It matches the noun it describes:

NounFormExample
दिवस (masculine)सगळासगळा दिवस
मुले (neuter plural)सगळीसगळी मुले
लोक (masculine plural)सगळेसगळे लोक
मुली (feminine plural)सगळ्यासगळ्या मुली

On its own, सगळे means everyone, and the verb is plural: सगळे आले. (Everyone came.)

The verb agrees with the noun and not with सगळे or काही. In सगळी मुले आली, मुले is plural neuter, so आली follows.

काही can also mean "a few" or "a certain": काही लोक आले. (Some people came.) It stays the same for every noun.

Add का to turn these into yes or no questions: कोणी आहे का?

Common Mistakes

  • Using one form of सगळे for every noun.

    सगळे मुले आली.
    सगळी मुले आली.

सगळे must match मुले, which is neuter plural, so use सगळी and आली.

  • Leaving the verb singular after काही and a plural noun.

    काही मुले खेळत आहे.
    काही मुले खेळत आहेत.

The verb follows मुले, so it is plural.
