काय

Asking What

Level 1Sounds Like kāya

काय does not change for gender or number. In the present, the verb after it matches the doer or the thing asked about.

How It Works

Say the sentence and put काय where the missing word would be.

QuestionAnswer
हे काय आहे?हे पुस्तक आहे.
तुझे नाव काय आहे?माझे नाव सई आहे.
बॅगेत काय आहे?बॅगेत पाणी आहे.

काय does not change for gender or number. In the present, the verb after it follows the doer or the thing asked about: तू काय करतेस?, तुम्ही काय करता?, तुम्हाला काय हवे? In the -ले past, the usual past rule applies: तिने काय केले?

For a person, ask with कोण: हा कोण आहे? (Who is this?)

काय is the Marathi word. Hindi uses क्या, and Marathi never does.

You can ask a short question with only two words: हे काय? (What is this?)
