Three Noun Genders

FoundationsSounds Like pulliṅga / strīliṅga / napunsakaliṅga

Gender belongs to the word, so पुस्तक is neuter and बस is feminine.

How It Works

Marathi has three genders. The word that goes with the noun changes shape.

GenderPointing wordBigNoun
masculineहामोठारस्ता, चहा, फोन
feminineहीमोठीशाळा, बस, गाडी
neuterहेमोठेघर, पुस्तक, मूल

Many masculine nouns end in -आ, many feminine nouns end in -ई or -आ, and many neuter nouns end in a consonant or -ए. The ending is only a hint. Learn the gender when you learn the word.

Gender follows the word, not the thing. बस is feminine and पुस्तक is neuter, so say ही बस and हे पुस्तक. These genders differ from Hindi, so do not copy them from Hindi.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the masculine for पुस्तक.

    माझा पुस्तक इथे आहे.
    माझे पुस्तक इथे आहे.

पुस्तक is neuter, so the word for my is माझे.

  • Using the masculine for बस.

    ही मोठा बस आहे.
    ही मोठी बस आहे.

बस is feminine, so the adjective is मोठी.
