-თვის (Receiver in the Perfect)
The Receiver in the Perfect
In the perfect group, the person who receives something is marked with -თვის, because the dative already holds the doer.
How It Works
At Level 3 you learned that the receiver takes -ს: ნინოს წიგნი მივეცი (I gave Nino a book). In the perfect group, the doer of a doing verb is already in the dative, so the receiver moves into -თვის (-tvis):
| Tense | Doer | Receiver | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| present | nominative | dative | მე ნინოს წიგნს ვაძლევ. |
| past | ergative | dative | მე ნინოს წიგნი მივეცი. |
| perfect | dative | -თვის | მე ნინოსთვის წიგნი მიმიცია. |
The same holds for telling someone something: დედისთვის ჯერ არაფერი მითქვამს (I haven't told mom anything yet). It holds for the pluperfect too: ნინოსთვის წიგნი მიმეცა (I had given Nino a book).
Pronouns use their -თვის forms: ჩემთვის (to me), შენთვის (to you), მისთვის (to him or her).
In other tenses, ნინოსთვის means for Nino, on Nino's behalf. In the perfect group it can also simply name the receiver.
