The Future Tense

Level 2

Most verbs make the future by adding a preverb to the present: ვაკეთებ (I do), გავაკეთებ (I will do).

How It Works

Georgian builds the future on the present. Add a preverb at the front, and the present becomes the future:

PresentFuture
ვაკეთებ (I do)გავაკეთებ (I will do)
ვწერ (I write)დავწერ (I will write)
ვხატავ (I draw)დავხატავ (I will draw)
ვამზადებ (I make, cook)მოვამზადებ (I will make)
ვრეცხავ (I wash)გავრეცხავ (I will wash)

The I and we marker ვ- comes after the preverb: გა + ვ + აკეთებ makes გავაკეთებ. For he or she, the ending -ს stays: გააკეთებს (he will do).

Each verb takes its own preverb, such as გა-, და- or მო-. There is no rule that tells you which one, so learn it with the verb.

Nothing else changes. The subject stays in the nominative and the object stays in the dative: ხვალ წერილს დავწერ.

A few verbs change more, such as going: წავალ (I will go).

Examples (5)

  1. ხვალ წერილს დავწერ.

    I'll write the letter tomorrow.

    ვწერ becomes დავწერ.

  2. საღამოს ვახშამს მოვამზადებთ.

    We'll make dinner this evening.

    ვამზადებთ becomes მოვამზადებთ.

  3. გიორგი მანქანას გარეცხავს.

    Giorgi will wash the car.

    რეცხავს becomes გარეცხავს.

  4. ხვალ ყველაფერს გავაკეთებ.

    I'll do everything tomorrow.

    The object stays dative: ყველაფერს.

  5. ბავშვები სახლს დახატავენ.

The children will draw a house.

    ხატავენ becomes დახატავენ.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting ვ- before the preverb.

    ხვალ წერილს ვდაწერ.
    ხვალ წერილს დავწერ.

ვ- goes after the preverb: და-ვ-წერ.
