The Simple Past

Level 3

The aorist tells what happened, usually with the same preverb as the future.

How It Works

The aorist is the simple past: what happened, start to finish. It is built on the future, so it usually has the same preverb.

PersonWroteDid
Iდავწერეგავაკეთე
youდაწერეგააკეთე
he, sheდაწერაგააკეთა
weდავწერეთგავაკეთეთ
you (several, or polite)დაწერეთგააკეთეთ
theyდაწერესგააკეთეს

The present ending (-ებ, -ავ, -ობ) usually drops: გავაკეთებ (I will do) becomes გავაკეთე (I did).

Three things change together in a doing verb's past:

  • the verb takes the past endings: დავწერე;
  • the doer takes -მა: ნინომ;
  • the object is in the nominative: წერილი.

(Nino is writing a letter) becomes (Nino wrote a letter).

Examples (5)

    Nino wrote a letter.

    დაწერა, with -მ on the doer.

    What did you do on Saturday?

    გააკეთე is the you-form.

    We learned a Georgian song.

    ვისწავლეთ is the we-form.

    The children drew a house.

    დახატეს ends in -ეს for they.

    I worked for a long time yesterday.

    ვიმუშავე, the past of ვმუშაობ.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping the present ending in the past.

    The -ებ of the present drops in the aorist.
