-ს (Dative)
The Dative Case
The dative adds -ს and marks the object of a present-tense verb.
How It Works
| Nominative | Dative | Example |
|---|---|---|
| წიგნი | წიგნს | წიგნს ვკითხულობ. |
| ბავშვი | ბავშვს | ბავშვს ვხედავ. |
| დედა | დედას | დედას ვხედავ. |
| ყავა | ყავას | ყავას ვსვამ. |
| ბავშვები | ბავშვებს | ბავშვებს ვხედავ. |
The dative has several jobs:
- the object of a present-tense doing verb: ნინო ყავას სვამს (Nino is drinking coffee);
- the person who feels, with verbs like უყვარს: გიორგის ყავა უყვარს (Giorgi loves coffee);
- days of the week: ორშაბათს (on Monday).
Learners often leave the object in its dictionary form. Listen for the -ს: it marks the thing being read, seen or drunk.
Most nouns that end in -ი drop it before -ს: ბავშვი, ბავშვს. A few keep it, such as the name გიორგი (გიორგის) and ტაქსი (ტაქსის).
