How It Works

NounWith -შიMeaning
სახლისახლშიin the house, at home
თბილისითბილისშიin Tbilisi
ჩანთაჩანთაშიin the bag
ეზოეზოშიin the yard

-ში answers the question სად? (where?): სად ცხოვრობ? თბილისში (Where do you live? In Tbilisi).

Georgian uses one ending for in and into. With a verb like მივდივარ (I'm going), -ში shows where you are going: სკოლაში მივდივარ (I'm going to school). English often says to or at here, but Georgian still uses -ში: სახლში ვარ (I'm at home).

-ში is written as part of the word, with no space before it.

Examples (5)

  1. ნინო სახლში არის.

    Nino is at home.

    სახლი loses its -ი: სახლში.

  2. გიორგი თბილისში ცხოვრობს.

    Giorgi lives in Tbilisi.

    თბილისში answers where.

  3. წიგნი ჩანთაში არის.

The book is in the bag.

ჩანთა ends in a vowel, so it just adds -ში.

  4. ბავშვები ეზოში არიან.

The children are in the yard.

    ეზო adds -ში.

  5. სკოლაში მივდივარ.

    I'm going to school.

With a verb of going, -ში means into or to.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping the -ი before -ში.

    სახლიში ვარ.
    სახლში ვარ.

The -ი of the dictionary form drops before -ში.
