-ი (Nominative)
The Nominative Case
The nominative is a noun's dictionary form: -ი after a consonant, nothing after a vowel.
How It Works
| Stem | Nominative | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| სახლ- | სახლი | house |
| ბავშვ- | ბავშვი | child |
| დედა | დედა | mother |
| ღვინო | ღვინო | wine |
| ნინო | ნინო | Nino |
The nominative is used for:
- the subject of a present-tense verb: ნინო წიგნს კითხულობს (Nino is reading a book);
- both nouns with to be: ნინო სტუდენტი არის (Nino is a student);
- the thing you want, love or have with feeling verbs: ყავა მინდა (I want coffee).
Other cases replace the -ი: სახლი becomes სახლს, სახლის, სახლში. The -ი is only the nominative ending, not part of the stem. In the past group, the nominative also marks the object, which you will learn at Level 3.
