How It Works

ဟူသည် sets up a definition. Put the word you explain first, then ဟူသည်, then what it means, then ဖြစ်သည်.

The full sentence is မြို့တော်ဟူသည် အစိုးရ ရုံးစိုက်ရာ မြို့ ဖြစ်သည်။ It means A capital is the city where the government has its offices.

Textbooks, dictionaries and school essays use this pattern to explain terms. Essays and wise sayings use it for big ideas, such as what a good friend is or what knowledge is worth. A sentence with ဟူသည် sounds careful and a little formal, so it suits a definition.

The spoken partner is ဆိုတာ, with a spoken ending: မုန့်ဟင်းခါးဆိုတာ ငါးဟင်းရည်နဲ့ စားတဲ့ မုန့်ဖတ်ပါ။ Keep the two apart: ဟူသည် goes with written endings such as ဖြစ်သည်, and ဆိုတာ goes with ပါ or ဖြစ်တယ်. A describing verb needs no ဖြစ်: ပညာဟူသည် အဖိုးတန်သည် (knowledge is precious).

ဟူသော, with သော, puts the name before a noun. ဟူသည်, with သည်, makes the name the topic of the sentence.
