ဖြစ်

Being and Becoming

Level 2

For a plain "I am a teacher" right now, Burmese uses the noun with ပါ: ကျွန်မ ဆရာမပါ။

How It Works

ဖြစ် is a verb with two everyday jobs.

  • Be or become. Put a role or a job before it: ဆရာဝန်ဖြစ်ချင်တယ်။ (I want to be a doctor.) Add သွား or လာ for a change that has taken place: အင်ဂျင်နီယာ ဖြစ်သွားပြီ။ (He has become an engineer.)
  • Happen. ဘာဖြစ်တာလဲ။ asks "What happened?" or "What's wrong?". ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ် means "it can happen" or "it's possible".

For a plain statement about who someone is now, Burmese leaves ဖြစ် out and puts ပါ after the noun:

MeaningEveryday Burmese
I am a student.ကျွန်တော် ကျောင်းသားပါ။
I am not a student.ကျွန်တော် ကျောင်းသား မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။
I want to be a teacher.ကျွန်တော် ဆရာဖြစ်ချင်တယ်။

The negative of a role uses မဟုတ်ဘူး. Describing words such as ပျော် (happy) are verbs already, so they never take ဖြစ်.

Examples (5)

  1. ကျွန်မ ဆရာဝန်ဖြစ်ချင်တယ်။

I want to be a doctor.

A woman is speaking; ဖြစ်ချင်တယ် means "want to be".

  2. ကိုဇော်ဇော် အခု ဆရာဖြစ်နေပြီ။

Ko Zaw Zaw is a teacher now.

ဖြစ်နေပြီ shows a role he has now reached.

  3. ကျွန်တော့်ညီ အင်ဂျင်နီယာ ဖြစ်သွားပြီ။

My younger brother has become an engineer.

A man is speaking; ဖြစ်သွားပြီ marks a change that has happened.

  4. ဘာဖြစ်တာလဲ၊ နေမကောင်းဘူးလား။

What's wrong? Aren't you feeling well?

    Here ဖြစ် means "happen".

  5. နီလာ ဘာဖြစ်ချင်လဲ။

What does Nila want to be?

ဘာဖြစ်ချင်လဲ asks about the role someone wants.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding ဖြစ် to a describing word.

    ကျွန်မ ပျော်ဖြစ်တယ်။
    ကျွန်မ ပျော်တယ်။

ပျော် (happy) is a verb on its own, so it takes the ending directly.
