Describing a Noun in Writing

Both mean the same. You will meet သော after describing words, as in လှပသော ပန်းခြံ (a beautiful park), and သည့် in news reports.

How It Works

Writing ends a describing clause with သော or သည့်, in the place where speech says တဲ့. The clause comes first and the noun last.

သော and သည့် mean the same. You will meet သော after describing words such as လှပ (be beautiful), and သည့် in news reports.

The verb before them has no ending of its own. Add ခဲ့ for a clear past: ရေးသားခဲ့သော (that was written). Put မ before the verb for a negative: မသိသော (unknown).

The whole phrase works as one noun, so it can take သည်, ကို or တွင် after it.

For something still to come, use မည့်. For a noun named by a quote or a title, use ဟူသော.

Keep သော and သည့် in written sentences. In conversation, say တဲ့.

  1. ယမန်နေ့က ကျင်းပခဲ့သည့် အစည်းအဝေးတွင် ဝန်ကြီး တက်ရောက်ခဲ့သည်။

    The minister attended the meeting held yesterday.

    ကျင်းပခဲ့သည့် describes the meeting.

  2. ပုဂံသည် လှပသော ဘုရားစေတီများ ရှိသည့် မြို့ ဖြစ်သည်။

    Bagan is a town with beautiful pagodas.

    လှပသော describes the pagodas, and ရှိသည့် describes the town.

  3. မြန်မာစာ လေ့လာသော နိုင်ငံခြားသားများ ပိုမို များပြားလာသည်။

    More and more foreigners are studying Burmese.

    လေ့လာသော describes the foreigners.

  4. ဒေါ်ခင်ခင် ရေးသားသော ဝတ္ထုကို လူငယ်များ နှစ်သက်ကြသည်။

    Young people like the novel that Daw Khin Khin wrote.

    The clause ending in သော comes before ဝတ္ထု.

  5. မုန့်ဟင်းခါး ရောင်းသည့် ဆိုင်

    a shop that sells mohinga

    A bare phrase: ရောင်းသည့် describes the shop.

Common Mistakes

  • Using spoken တဲ့ in a written sentence.

    ကျင်းပခဲ့တဲ့ အစည်းအဝေးတွင် ဝန်ကြီး တက်ရောက်ခဲ့သည်။
    ကျင်းပခဲ့သည့် အစည်းအဝေးတွင် ဝန်ကြီး တက်ရောက်ခဲ့သည်။

    A sentence ending in သည် uses သည့် or သော.

  • Keeping the ending သည် before သော.

    ရေးသားသည်သော ဝတ္ထု
    ရေးသားသော ဝတ္ထု

    သော follows the bare verb.
