ဆိုတဲ့
Someone Called
After a full sentence, ဆိုတဲ့ gives the content of news or an idea: ရုံးပိတ်မယ်ဆိုတဲ့ သတင်း (the news that the office will close).
How It Works
ဆိုတဲ့ works like တဲ့: the words before it describe the noun after it. Here the description is a name, so ဆိုတဲ့ means "called" or "named". It comes from ဆို (say, call).
| Name + ဆိုတဲ့ | Noun | English |
|---|---|---|
| ဇော်ဇော်ဆိုတဲ့ | သူငယ်ချင်း | a friend called Zaw Zaw |
| မုန့်ဟင်းခါးဆိုတဲ့ | အစားအစာ | a dish called mohinga |
| ပြင်ဦးလွင်ဆိုတဲ့ | မြို့ | a town called Pyin Oo Lwin |
Use it to bring in a person or a place the listener may not know yet. Once the listener knows who or what you mean, just say the name.
After a full sentence that keeps its ending, ဆိုတဲ့ gives the content of a noun such as သတင်း (news), စကား (words) or အကြံ (idea): ရုံးပိတ်မယ်ဆိုတဲ့ သတင်း (the news that the office will close).
To explain what a word or a name means, use ဆိုတာ. Writing uses ဟူသော in the same place as ဆိုတဲ့.
