တာ

An Action as a Noun

Level 2

A phrase with တာ also means "what someone does": သူပြောတာ နားမလည်ဘူး။ (I didn't understand what she said.)

How It Works

တာ turns a verb, or a whole verb phrase, into a noun. Then you can say you like it, or that it is hard or easy.

ActionAs a noun
စာဖတ်တယ်။ I read.စာဖတ်တာ ကြိုက်တယ်။ I like reading.
စောစောထတယ်။ I get up early.စောစောထတာ ခက်တယ်။ Getting up early is hard.
ခရီးသွားတယ်။ I travel.ခရီးသွားတာ ပျော်တယ်။ Traveling is fun.

Put တာ at the end of the whole phrase. The object and helper words stay inside: မြန်မာလို ပြောတတ်တာ (being able to speak Burmese).

A phrase with တာ also means "the thing that someone does": သူပြောတာ (what she said), ကျွန်မ ချက်တာ (what I cooked).

Common verbs after a တာ phrase are ကြိုက် (like), ခက် (be hard), လွယ် (be easy), ကောင်း (be good) and ဝါသနာပါ (enjoy as a hobby).

In writing, the same job is done by ခြင်း.

  3. သူပြောတာ နားမလည်ဘူး။

  5. မြန်မာလို ပြောတာ မခက်ဘူး။

    Speaking Burmese isn't hard.

တာ comes after the whole phrase မြန်မာလို ပြော.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the bare verb as the thing you like.

    စာဖတ် ကြိုက်တယ်။
    စာဖတ်တာ ကြိုက်တယ်။

A verb needs တာ before it can be the thing you like.
