ဆိုတာ
Naming a Topic to Explain It
Ask what something is with ဆိုတာ ဘာလဲ: လက်ဖက်သုပ်ဆိုတာ ဘာလဲ။ (What is tea leaf salad?)
How It Works
ဆိုတာ comes from ဆို (say) and တာ (the thing). It sets up a topic and tells the listener an explanation is coming.
| Use | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| defining | သင်္ကြန်ဆိုတာ ရေပွဲတော်ပါ။ | Thingyan is the water festival. |
| asking | လက်ဖက်သုပ်ဆိုတာ ဘာလဲ။ | What is tea leaf salad? |
| who someone is | အောင်အောင်ဆိုတာ ကျွန်တော့်ညီပါ။ | Aung Aung is my younger brother. |
| the fact that | သူ လာမယ်ဆိုတာ | the fact that he's coming |
After a whole sentence with တယ် or မယ်, ဆိုတာ means "the fact that": သူ လာမယ်ဆိုတာ ကျွန်မ မသိဘူး (I didn't know he was coming).
ဆိုတဲ့ looks close but goes before a noun and means "called": ကိုကိုဆိုတဲ့ လူ (a man called Ko Ko).
Writing uses ဟူသည် for the same job.
To ask who someone is, say ဆိုတာ ဘယ်သူလဲ: ကိုကိုဆိုတာ ဘယ်သူလဲ (Who is Ko Ko?).
