After a full statement, ဟူသော means "that": ရွှေ့ဆိုင်းမည်ဟူသော သတင်း (the news that it will be postponed).

How It Works

ဟူသော links a name, a word or a whole statement to the noun that follows. The phrase means "called", "named" or "that says".

With a statement, the statement keeps its own ending, such as မည် or ပြီ, before ဟူသော. The noun after it is usually a word for news, belief, idea or rule: သတင်း, ယုံကြည်ချက်, အယူအဆ, စည်းကမ်း.

News uses it to name people, places and books for the first time, and to report a claim before saying whether it is true: … ဟူသော သတင်းသည် မမှန်ကန်ပါ (the news that … is not true).

The spoken partner is ဆိုတဲ့: ပုဂံဆိုတဲ့ မြို့. ဟူသော belongs with written words around it, such as သည်, ၏ and များ.

Put a space after ဟူသော, then the noun. A book or film title in quotation marks also comes before ဟူသော.

    A whole statement with မည် comes before ဟူသော.

    The word mingala comes from Pali.

    ဟူသော names the word being talked about.

  5. ကြိုးစားလျှင် အောင်မြင်မည်ဟူသော ယုံကြည်ချက်ဖြင့် စာကျက်ခဲ့သည်။

    She studied hard, believing that effort would bring success.

    ဟူသော links the belief to the noun ယုံကြည်ချက်.

Common Mistakes

  • Using spoken ဆိုတဲ့ in a written sentence.

    ပုဂံဆိုတဲ့ မြို့ဟောင်းသို့ ရောက်ရှိခဲ့သည်။
    ပုဂံဟူသော မြို့ဟောင်းသို့ ရောက်ရှိခဲ့သည်။

    A sentence that ends with သည် takes ဟူသော.
