-gani uchun

Because: -gani Uchun

Level 3

-gan + possessive ending + uchun = because: kasal boʻlgani uchun (because he was ill), kech qolganim uchun (because I was late).

How It Works

Here the verb becomes a noun meaning his doing or my doing, and uchun turns it into a reason: literally for my being late, for his being ill.

1. Building the form
Stem + -gan + possessive ending + uchun:

  • kelganim uchun (because I came)
  • kelganing uchun (because you came, familiar)
  • kelgani uchun (because he or she came)
  • kelganimiz uchun (because we came)
  • kelganingiz uchun (because you came, polite)
  • kelganlari uchun (because they came)

After k and q the ending is written -kan and -qan: kechikkanim uchun (because I was late).

2. Negative
Put -ma- before -gan: Pulim yetmagani uchun (because I didn’t have enough money).

3. Noun sentences
With a noun or adjective, use boʻlgan: Bugun bayram boʻlgani uchun (because today is a holiday).

4. An ongoing reason
For something happening at that moment, use -(a)yotgan in the same frame: Yomgʻir yogʻayotgani uchun uyda qoldik (We stayed home because it was raining).

5. Thanks and apologies
The same frame gives the reason for thanks or an apology: Yordam berganingiz uchun rahmat (Thank you for helping), Kech qolganim uchun kechirasiz (Sorry for being late).

6. Compared with chunki
chunki starts a separate clause after the result: Kelmadi, chunki kasal edi. -gani uchun packs the reason into one sentence before the result. In formal writing you will also see -ganligi + uchun with the same meaning.

Examples (6)

  1. Kasal boʻlgani uchun darsga kelmadi.

He didn’t come to class because he was ill.

    Sorry for being late.

Word by Word: Late my-staying for excuse-me.

  3. Yomgʻir yogʻayotgani uchun uyda qoldik.

We stayed home because it was raining.

Word by Word: Rain its-falling for home-at we-stayed.

An ongoing reason uses -(a)yotgan before the possessive ending.

  4. Bugun bayram boʻlgani uchun doʻkonlar yopiq.

Word by Word: Today holiday its-being for shops closed.

  5. Pulim yetmagani uchun telefonni olmadim.

I didn’t buy the phone because I didn’t have enough money.

  6. Yordam berganingiz uchun rahmat.

    Thank you for helping.

Word by Word: Help your-giving for thanks.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting uchun after a finite past verb.

    Kasal boʻldi uchun kelmadi.
    Kasal boʻlgani uchun kelmadi.

Uchun follows nouns. The verb must first become the -gan form with a possessive ending.

  • Using the ending of the wrong person (intended meaning: Sorry that I was late).

    Kech qolganingiz uchun kechirasiz.
    Kech qolganim uchun kechirasiz.

Kech qolganingiz means that you were late. The ending on -gan names who was late, and here that is I: qolganim.

  • Using -gani uchun when you mean a purpose (to learn Uzbek).

Oʻzbek tilini oʻrganganim uchun kitob oldim.
Oʻzbek tilini oʻrganish uchun kitob oldim.

The -ganim uchun sentence means I bought a book because I learned Uzbek. A purpose (in order to) needs -ish uchun.
