-ish uchun
In Order to: -ish Uchun
Verb noun -(i)sh + uchun = in order to: pul topish uchun (in order to earn money), dam olish uchun (in order to rest).
How It Works
The purpose phrase usually comes before the main verb, and the main verb closes the sentence.
1. Building the form
Make the verb noun with -(i)sh: -sh after a vowel and -ish after a consonant. Then add uchun:
- ol- → olish uchun (in order to get)
- oʻqi- → oʻqish uchun (in order to read)
- ishla- → ishlash uchun (in order to work)
2. Same person
With no possessive ending, the purpose belongs to the subject: Pul topish uchun ishlayman (I work to earn money).
3. Someone else
Put a possessive ending on the verb noun to name who should do it: -im, -ing, -i, -imiz, -ingiz, -lari. Siz tushunishingiz uchun sekinroq gapiraman (I’ll speak more slowly so that you understand).
4. So as not to
For a negative purpose, use the negative verb noun -maslik: Kechikmaslik uchun erta chiqdim (I left early so as not to be late).
5. Other ways to say it
- With a verb of going or coming, the shorter -gani also works: Non olgani chiqdi = Non olish uchun chiqdi (He went out to buy bread).
- With verbs of motion you will also hear the dative -ga: Dam olishga keldik (We came to rest).
- In formal writing, -ish maqsadida means with the aim of.
To ask about a purpose, use nima uchun (what for, why).
