-ganidan

From, Glad That: -ganidan

Level 3

-gan + possessive ending + -dan = from, out of, glad that: koʻrganimdan xursandman (I’m glad to see you), charchaganidan (from being tired).

How It Works

This pattern joins the -gan verb noun with the case ending -dan (from). The feeling or result comes after it.

1. Building the form
Stem + -gan + possessive ending + -dan:

  • koʻrganimdan (that I saw)
  • koʻrganingdan (that you saw, familiar)
  • koʻrganidan (that he or she saw)
  • koʻrganimizdan (that we saw)
  • koʻrganingizdan (that you saw, polite)
  • koʻrganlaridan (that they saw)

The possessive ending names who did the action, which is not always the person who feels: Kelganingizdan xursandman (I’m glad that you came).

2. Feelings
Tanishganimdan xursandman (Nice to meet you) is one of the most common set phrases. Other feeling words work the same way: Unga baqirganimdan uyaldim (I felt ashamed that I shouted at him).

3. So much that
With a state or an action, -ganidan says the result came from it: Charchaganidan uxlab qoldi (He was so tired that he fell asleep), Qattiq kulganidan koʻzlaridan yosh chiqdi (She laughed so hard that tears came to her eyes).

4. Compared with -gani uchun
-gani uchun gives a plain reason: because. -ganidan points to the direct source of an emotion or of a strong reaction.

5. Look-alikes
With beri, the same form means since: Kelganimdan beri (since I came); see -dan beri. With keyin it means after; see -gandan keyin.

Examples (6)

  1. Sizni koʻrganimdan xursandman.

    I’m glad to see you.

    Word by Word: You-(obj.) my-seeing-from glad-I-am.

  2. Tanishganimdan xursandman.

    Nice to meet you.

    Word by Word: My-getting-acquainted-from glad-I-am.

A fixed polite phrase used when meeting someone.

  3. Charchaganidan uxlab qoldi.

    He fell asleep from tiredness.

Word by Word: His-having-tired-from sleeping he-remained.

  4. Imtihondan oʻtganidan juda xursand.

She is very happy that she passed the exam.

Word by Word: Exam-from her-passing-from very glad.

The first -dan belongs to imtihondan oʻtmoq (to pass an exam); the second gives the cause of the joy.

  5. Unga baqirganimdan uyaldim.

I felt ashamed that I shouted at him.

    Word by Word: Him-at my-shouting-from I-was-ashamed.

  6. Qattiq kulganidan koʻzlaridan yosh chiqdi.

She laughed so hard that tears came to her eyes.

Word by Word: Hard her-laughing-from eyes-her-from tear came-out.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting -dan on a finite past verb.

    Sizni koʻrdimdan xursandman.
    Sizni koʻrganimdan xursandman.

Case endings attach to nouns, so the verb must first become -gan with a possessive ending: koʻrganim, then -dan.

  • Choosing the ending of the person who feels instead of the person who acts (intended meaning: I’m glad to see you).

    Sizni koʻrganingizdan xursandman.
    Sizni koʻrganimdan xursandman.

Koʻrganingizdan means that you saw. The ending on -gan must name who did the seeing, which here is I: koʻrganimdan.
