bu yerda / u yerda

Here and There

Level 1

Bu yerda means here and u yerda means there: U yerda kim bor? (Who is there?). For movement toward a place, change the ending to -ga: Bu yerga keling (Come here).

How It Works

Three endings, three meanings

  • -da, where something is: bu yerda (here), u yerda (there). See In, At or On: -da.
  • -ga, where something goes: bu yerga (to here), u yerga (to there). See To or Toward: -ga.
  • -dan, where something comes from: bu yerdan (from here), u yerdan (from there). See From: -dan.

English uses "here" for both "I am here" and "Come here", but Uzbek must choose: Men shu yerdaman (I am here), Bu yerga keling (Come here).

Shu yerda
Shu yerda also means here, often "right here, in this very spot". You will hear it as often as bu yerda. See This One, That Same One.

Spelling
Write bu yerda and u yerda as two words. The question word is different: qayerda (where) is written as one word.

With a personal ending
To say where you are, put the person ending after -da: shu yerda + -man → shu yerdaman (I am here). See I Am: -man. To say what is found somewhere, add bor: Bu yerda choyxona bor (There is a teahouse here).

Examples (6)

  1. Bu yerga keling.

    Come here.

Word by Word: This place-to come.

Movement toward a place needs -ga, not -da.

  2. U yerda kim bor?

    Who is there?

Word by Word: That place-at who there-is?

  3. Men shu yerdaman.

    I am here.

Word by Word: I this place-at-I-am.

-man goes on after -da: shu yerdaman.

  4. Bu yerda choyxona bor.

    There is a teahouse here.

Word by Word: This place-at teahouse there-is.

  5. Kitobim u yerda, stol ustida.

My book is over there, on the table.

Word by Word: Book-my that place-at, table top-its-at.

  6. Bu yerdan bozor uzoqmi?

Is the bazaar far from here?

Word by Word: This place-from bazaar far-Q?

-dan marks the starting point: from here.

Common Mistakes

  • Using -da (location) for movement toward a place.

    Bu yerda keling.
    Bu yerga keling.

Keling (come) needs a destination, so use -ga: bu yerga.

  • Writing u yerda as one word.

    Uyerda kim bor?
    U yerda kim bor?

The official spelling rules write u, bu and shu apart from the next word: u yerda, bu yerda, shu yerda.

  • Using -da for the place you come from.

    Men u yerda keldim.
    Men u yerdan keldim.

Coming from a place needs -dan: u yerdan (from there). -da only says where something is.
