yoʻq
There Is Not, And No
yoʻq has two jobs: there is no (Muzlatkichda sut yoʻq. There is no milk in the fridge.) and the answer no (Yoʻq, rahmat. No, thank you.)
How It Works
1. There is no, there are no
Use the same word order as with bor: place + thing + yoʻq.
- Muzlatkichda sut yoʻq. (There is no milk in the fridge.)
- Muammo yoʻq. (No problem.)
2. Not having
Put a possessive ending on the thing and end with yoʻq:
- Vaqtim yoʻq. (I have no time.)
- Bugun darsimiz yoʻq. (We have no class today.)
3. The answer "no"
Yoʻq answers a yes-no question, the opposite of ha. It only says "no"; if you add a verb, make the verb negative too: Choy ichasizmi? – Yoʻq, ichmayman. (Will you have tea? – No, I won't.) A polite refusal is Yoʻq, rahmat. (No, thank you.)
yoʻq or emas?
- yoʻq: the thing is not there at all. Uyda non yoʻq. (There is no bread at home.)
- emas: something is not a certain thing. Bu non emas. (This isn't bread.)
- For a person who is not in a place, both are heard: Anvar uyda emas and, in everyday speech, Anvar uyda yoʻq (Anvar isn't home).
Spelling
Write yoʻq with the letter oʻ (turned comma, U+02BB). yoq without it is a different word, the stem of yoqmoq (to light; to please). When an ending starting with a vowel is added, the q changes: yoʻq → yoʻgʻi.
Later you will meet yoʻq in hech kim yoʻq (there is nobody) and in -gani yoʻq (has not done yet).

Common Mistakes
Putting yoʻq in front of a verb to make it negative.
Men yoʻq boraman.Men bormayman.yoʻq does not negate verbs. Put -ma- after the verb stem: bor- + -ma- + -y- + -man → bormayman (I won't go).
Using emas to say you do not have something.
Vaqtim emas.Vaqtim yoʻq.Having and not having use bor and yoʻq. emas only says that something is not a certain thing.
Dropping the turned comma from oʻ.
Vaqtim yoq.Vaqtim yoʻq.yoq is a different word (the stem of yoqmoq, to light or to please). The letter oʻ is part of yoʻq.
