siz

You (Polite or Plural)

Level 1

Siz is the respectful way to say you to one person, and also the way to say you to several people: Siz qayerdansiz? (Where are you from?)

How It Works

When to say siz
Use siz with anyone older than you, anyone you have just met, and anyone in a formal setting. Many families also use siz with parents and older relatives. When you are unsure, choose siz: it is never rude, while sen to the wrong person is.

Siz for a group
Siz also means you when speaking to several people: Hurmatli mehmonlar, xush kelibsiz! (Dear guests, welcome!). To make it clear that you mean more than one person, add -lar: see You All.

The forms that go with siz

  • Noun sentence: oʻqituvchi + -siz → oʻqituvchisiz. In a question, textbooks put -mi first (talabamisiz?), and everyday speech also puts it last (talabasizmi?). See You Are (Polite or Plural): -siz.
  • Present-tense verb: ich- + -a + -siz → ichasiz (you drink), ichasizmi? (do you drink?).
  • Your: ism + -ingiz → ismingiz (your name), as in Ismingiz nima?.
  • Commands: keling (please come). See Polite Commands: -(i)ng.

Case forms
Endings attach directly: sizga (to you), sizni (you, as an object), sizning (your), sizda (with you, you have).

Examples (6)

  1. Siz qayerdansiz?

    Where are you from?

    Word by Word: You where-from-you?

  2. Siz oʻqituvchisiz.

    You are a teacher.

    Word by Word: You teacher-you.

  3. Siz choy ichasizmi?

    Would you like some tea?

Word by Word: You tea drink-you-Q?

The verb ends in -siz to match siz, then -mi makes it a question.

  4. Kechirasiz, siz talabamisiz?

Excuse me, are you a student?

Word by Word: Excuse-me, you student-Q-you?

This is the textbook order: -mi comes before -siz.

  5. Hurmatli mehmonlar, xush kelibsiz!

    Dear guests, welcome!

Here -siz addresses a whole group of guests.

  6. Sizning ismingiz nima?

    What is your name?

Word by Word: Your name-your what?

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing the polite pronoun with the familiar ending.

    Siz talabasan.
    Siz talabasiz.

-san belongs to sen. In a noun sentence with siz, use -siz.

  • Using the familiar your-ending after sizning.

    Sizning isming nima?
    Sizning ismingiz nima?

Sizning goes with -(i)ngiz: ismingiz. The ending -(i)ng belongs to sen: sening isming.

  • Using familiar sen forms with an older stranger (a register mismatch, not a grammar error).

    Assalomu alaykum, qayerdansan?
    Assalomu alaykum, qayerdansiz?

Sen forms sound too familiar with someone you have just met. Use siz and its ending -siz.
