Future Negation

Level 3Sounds Like ne + majbutníj čas

To say you 'will not' do something in Ukrainian, place the particle не immediately before the future verb form. Because Ukrainian has three ways to form the future, the placement depends on the structure: не + perfective verb, не буду + infinitive, or не + synthetic verb.

How It Works

Negation in the future tense is straightforward but requires attention to the specific future construction being used. Generally, the particle не is written as a separate word from the verb, except when the verb cannot be used without it (e.g., ненавидітиму - I will hate) or has the prefix недо- indicating insufficiency (e.g., недобачатиму - I will have poor eyesight). Note the important distinction between the prefix недо- (written as one word) and the particle не followed by the prefix до-, which indicates failing to complete an action (written as two words, e.g., не дослухаю - I will not listen to the end).

Crucial Rule: Only imperfective verbs can form the analytic or synthetic future. Perfective verbs (like зробити) can never be used with буду or the -му suffix. Forms like буду зробити or зробитиму are strictly ungrammatical.

  • Simple Future (Perfective): Used for completed results. Place не before the conjugated verb.
Я не зроблю цього. (I will not do this.)
  • Analytic Future (Imperfective): The standard conversational neutral in Ukrainian. Place не before the auxiliary verb буду.
Я не буду працювати. (I will not be working.)
  • Synthetic Future (Imperfective): A more formal, literary, or poetic alternative. It adds a conjugated suffix starting with -м- to the full infinitive (e.g., працювати + -му = працюватиму). For reflexive verbs, the suffix is added to the infinitive, followed by the reflexive postfix -ся/-сь (e.g., сміятися + -му = сміятимуся). Place не before the whole word.
Я не працюватиму. (I will not be working.)

Important Nuances: When a sentence is negated, the direct object often changes from the Accusative case to the Genitive of Negation. For example: Я читатиму книжку (Acc.) becomes Я не читатиму книжки (Gen.). Additionally, in existential constructions (stating that someone or something will not be present), the sentence becomes subjectless (impersonal) and the logical subject is expressed in the Genitive case: Мене не буде вдома (I will not be at home). Finally, note that while the present tense existential 'there is no' is written as one word (немає), the future tense equivalent is ALWAYS written as two words (не буде).

Examples (5)

  1. Я не буду чекати на тебе біля метро.

I will not be waiting for you near the metro.

Word by Word: I not will wait on you near metro.

Uses the analytic future to negate a continuous process (waiting). This is the most common and neutral way to express the future in spoken Ukrainian.

  2. Ми не підемо в парк сьогодні через дощ.

We will not go to the park today because of the rain.

Word by Word: We not will-go in park today through rain.

Uses the perfective simple future to negate a specific, completed trip.

  3. Вона не працюватиме в ці вихідні.

She will not be working this weekend.

Word by Word: She not will-work in these weekends.

Uses the synthetic future, which is a more formal or literary alternative to the analytic form.

  4. Ніхто не прийде на вечірку.

Nobody will come to the party.

Word by Word: Nobody not will-come on party.

Demonstrates negative concord, where 'не' is required even though 'ніхто' (nobody) is present.

  5. Завтра не буде снігу.

There will be no snow tomorrow.

Word by Word: Tomorrow not will-be snow (Gen.).

Uses existential negation with the Genitive case for the subject that 'will not be'.

Common Mistakes

  • Omitting 'не' when using negative pronouns like 'ніхто' or 'ніколи'.

    Ніхто прийде.
    Ніхто не прийде.

In Ukrainian, you must use 'double negation'. Even if you have a negative word like 'nobody', the verb must still have 'не'.

  • Using the auxiliary 'буду' or the synthetic suffix '-му' with a perfective verb.

    Я не буду прочитати книгу.
    Я не прочитаю книгу.

The auxiliary 'буду' and the synthetic suffix '-му' can only be used with imperfective infinitives. Perfective verbs like 'прочитати' or 'зробити' form the future by changing their endings directly (simple future) and cannot be combined with 'буду'.

  • Unnaturally placing 'не' between the auxiliary and the infinitive in standard statements.

    Я буду не працювати.
    Я не буду працювати.

While placing 'не' before the infinitive is grammatically possible when specifically contrasting the lexical action, the standard and most natural phrasing is to place 'не' before the auxiliary 'буду'.
