не + Verb
Negating Verbs with Не
To say 'do not' or 'is not' in Ukrainian, simply place не before the verb. Unlike English, you don't need extra words like 'do' or 'does'.
How It Works
Negating verbs in Ukrainian is straightforward but has a few important rules:
- Direct Negation: Simply place the particle не immediately before the verb. The verb stays in its normal conjugated form.
Я знаю (I know) → Я не знаю (I don't know). - Negative Concord: If you use a negative pronoun like ніхто (nobody) or ніколи (never), you must still include не before the verb. This is a grammatical requirement.
- Spelling: Usually, не is a separate word. However, it is written together if the verb cannot exist without it (e.g., ненавидіти - to hate). Note the difference between немає (there is no/none) and не має (he/she/it does not have).
- Case Change: When you negate a verb, the direct object often changes from the Accusative case to the Genitive case.
Examples (5)
- Я не розумію.
I do not understand.
Word by Word: I not understand.
A simple negation where 'не' is placed directly before the verb 'розумію'.
- Він не хоче пити кави.
He does not want to drink coffee.
Word by Word: He not wants to-drink coffee (genitive).
Note that 'coffee' is in the genitive case (кави) because the verb is negated.
- Ніхто не прийшов.
Nobody came.
Word by Word: Nobody not came.
This demonstrates negative concord: both 'ніхто' and 'не' are required.
- Ми не бачили цього фільму.
We didn't see this movie.
Word by Word: We not saw this movie (genitive).
Negation works the same way in the past tense.
- Я ненавиджу черги.
I hate queues.
Word by Word: I hate queues.
An example where 'не' is part of the verb 'ненавидіти' and is written together.
Common Mistakes
Omitting 'не' when using negative pronouns (Double Negatives).
Ніхто знає.Ніхто не знає.In Ukrainian, you must use 'не' even if you have another negative word like 'ніхто' (nobody). This is called negative concord.
Confusing 'немає' (non-existence) with 'не має' (does not have).
Він немає книги.Він не має книги.'Немає' is a single word used for 'there is not' or 'does not exist'. When negating the verb 'мати' (to have) for a specific subject, write 'не має' as two words.
Trying to use 'do' or 'does' as an auxiliary verb.
Я роблю не знати.Я не знаю.Ukrainian does not use 'do-support' for negation. Just put 'не' before the main verb.
