Future Copula and Existence with Буде

Level 3Sounds Like bude âk majbutnâ zv'âzka

In Ukrainian, while the present tense usually omits the verb 'to be', the future tense requires the forms of бути (буду, будеш, буде, etc.). It is used for identity (I will be a doctor), existence (There will be a party), and possession (I will have a car).

How It Works

The future copula буде (and its conjugated forms) serves several vital functions in Ukrainian:

1. Nominal Predicates: When saying someone 'will be' something (a profession, a role, a state), the noun following the verb is traditionally put in the Instrumental Predicate Role. However, the Nominative case is also natural and grammatically correct, especially for adjectives or permanent states.
2. Existential: To state that something will exist or take place ('there will be').
3. Possession: Ukrainian uses the construction 'У + Genitive + буде + Nominative'. The verb agrees with the thing possessed. However, in the negative form не буде, the verb freezes in the 3rd-person singular regardless of whether the negated object is singular or plural, and the object takes the Genitive case (e.g., 'У мене не буде планів').
4. Impersonal and Passive: Used with adverbs to describe future conditions (e.g., 'Буде холодно'). It is also used to form the future passive with passive participles or impersonal forms (e.g., 'Роботу буде зроблено').
5. Auxiliary for Future Tense: It forms the analytic future (буду працювати). Crucially, this construction is strictly limited to imperfective verbs. Ukrainian also has a synthetic future (працюватиму). These two forms are 100% interchangeable in meaning, but the synthetic form is uniquely Ukrainian and highly encouraged for sounding natural. Note that the verb бути itself cannot take the synthetic future ending (i.e., forms like бутиму do not exist); you must use its conjugated forms (буду, буде, etc.). When using the analytic future, beware of the 'Double Conjugation' trap: only бути is conjugated, while the main verb must remain in the infinitive (e.g., Я буду працювати, never Я буду працюю). To form the future tense of perfective verbs, you simply use present-tense conjugation endings on the perfective stem (e.g., зроблю, напишу).

Examples (6)

  1. Вона буде хорошою лікаркою.

She will be a good doctor.

Word by Word: She will-be good doctor (Instrumental).

Notice that 'хорошою лікаркою' is in the instrumental case, which is standard after the future copula for roles and professions.

  2. Завтра буде свято.

Tomorrow there will be a holiday.

Word by Word: Tomorrow will-be holiday.

This is the existential use, asserting that an event will occur.

  3. У нас будуть нові можливості.

    We will have new opportunities.

Word by Word: At us will-be (plural) new opportunities.

In possessive sentences, the verb 'будуть' agrees with the plural subject 'можливості' (opportunities).

  4. Увечері буде холодно.

It will be cold in the evening.

Word by Word: In-evening will-be cold.

An impersonal construction using the 3rd person singular 'буде' with the adverb 'холодно'.

  5. Я буду читати цю книжку завтра.

I will be reading this book tomorrow.

Word by Word: I will-be to-read this book tomorrow.

Here, 'буду' acts as an auxiliary verb to form the analytic future of an imperfective verb.

  6. Це будеш ти.

    It will be you.

Word by Word: This will-be you.

When the predicate is a personal pronoun like 'ти', it remains in the nominative case rather than shifting to the instrumental.

Common Mistakes

  • Conjugating both the auxiliary verb 'бути' and the main verb in the analytic future tense.

    Я буду працюю завтра.
Я буду працювати завтра. / Я працюватиму завтра.

When forming the analytic future, only the auxiliary verb бути is conjugated. The main verb must remain in the infinitive. This is known as the 'Double Conjugation' trap. Alternatively, you can use the interchangeable synthetic future.

  • Changing 'не буде' to plural in negative possessive constructions.

    У мене не будуть грошей.
    У мене не буде грошей.

In negative possession, the form не буде freezes in the 3rd-person singular regardless of whether the negated object is singular or plural, and the object must be in the Genitive case.

  • Failing to agree the verb with the object in affirmative possessive constructions.

    У мене буде гроші.
    У мене будуть гроші.

In the possession with у мене є construction in the future tense, the verb must agree in number with the thing being possessed (гроші is plural).

Learn This First

To understand the future copula 'буде', learners must first be familiar with how Ukrainian handles existence and identity in the present tense (often with no verb or with 'є'). Additionally, since 'буде' often triggers the instrumental case for predicate nouns, knowledge of that case usage is necessary for forming complete sentences like 'Вона буде лікаркою'.
