не було / не буде + Genitive
Genitive After Не Було and Не Буде
To say 'there was no' or 'there will be no' in Ukrainian, use the fixed forms не було or не буде and put the noun in the Genitive case.
How It Works
This pattern is the negative counterpart to existential existence. It is used to state that something is completely absent from a context.
1. The Verb Forms:
- Past: Always не було (neuter singular). Do not change it for masculine, feminine, or plural nouns.
- Future: Always не буде (3rd person singular). Do not use the plural 'не будуть' for this specific existential meaning.
2. The Case:
The noun or pronoun representing the absent thing must be in the Genitive case. This is mandatory in standard Ukrainian.
3. Personal Pronouns:
When saying 'I wasn't there' or 'They won't be there,' pronouns also shift to the Genitive:
- Я → мене
- Ти → тебе
- Він/Воно → його
- Вона → її
- Ми → нас
- Ви → вас
- Вони → їх
4. Nuance:
While you can technically say 'Він не був там' (He wasn't there) focusing on his state, it is much more natural and common to use 'Його не було там' to simply state his absence.
Examples (5)
- Учора не було дощу.
There was no rain yesterday.
Word by Word: Yesterday not was rain (genitive).
The noun 'дощ' (rain) changes to the genitive 'дощу' after 'не було'.
- Завтра не буде уроків.
There will be no lessons tomorrow.
Word by Word: Tomorrow not will-be lessons (genitive plural).
Even though 'lessons' is plural, the verb remains 'не буде' and the noun takes the genitive plural 'уроків'.
- Мене не було вдома, коли ти дзвонив.
I wasn't home when you called.
Word by Word: Me (genitive) not was at-home, when you called.
The pronoun 'я' (I) becomes 'мене' (me/genitive) to express absence.
- У магазині не було хліба.
There was no bread in the store.
Word by Word: In store not was bread (genitive).
A classic example of existential negation in the past tense.
- Нас не буде на вечірці.
We won't be at the party.
Word by Word: Us (genitive) not will-be at party.
Uses the genitive of 'ми' (we) to show future absence.
Common Mistakes
Using plural or feminine verb forms to match the noun.
Не були занять. / Не була електрика.Не було занять. / Не було електрики.In existential negation, the verb is impersonal and stays in the neuter singular form 'не було'.
Using the Nominative case for the noun.
Завтра не буде дощ.Завтра не буде дощу.The noun must be in the Genitive case to indicate non-existence.
Using 'немає' for the past or future.
Учора немає дощу.Учора не було дощу.'Немає' is only for the present tense. For the past, you must use 'не було'.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand negative existence in the past and future, you first need to be familiar with the present tense equivalent (немає + genitive). You also need to know the past and future forms of the verb 'бути' (to be), as these serve as the base for the 'не було' and 'не буде' constructions.
- у мене немаєNegative Possession
This pattern introduces the core concept of using the genitive case for negation of existence/possession in the present tense (немає).
Level 1 - будеFuture Copula and Existence with Буде
Understanding the future form 'буде' is necessary to recognize it as the marker for future existence before applying the genitive negation rule.
