Masculine Past Tense

The Ukrainian past tense changes based on gender and number, not person. For masculine subjects (I, you, he), the verb usually ends in -в.

How It Works

In Ukrainian, the past tense functions differently than the present. While the present tense changes based on who is speaking (I, you, he), the past tense only cares about the gender and number of the subject. The masculine past tense is unique because it uses the suffix -в (or a zero ending), whereas all other past tense forms (feminine, neuter, and plural) use the suffix -л-.

1. Standard Formation:
For most verbs, remove the -ти ending and add -в. This includes the most common verb, бути (to be):

  • бу-ти → був (he / I [masc.] / you [masc.] was/were)
  • працюва-ти → працював (he / I [masc.] / you [masc.] worked)
  • бачи-ти → бачив (he / I [masc.] / you [masc.] saw)

2. Consonant Stems (Zero Ending):
If the stem ends in a consonant after removing -ти, the masculine form usually takes no suffix (a 'zero ending'). Often, the vowel о or е in the root changes to і in this closed syllable (with rare exceptions like я changing to і in лягти):

  • нес-ти → ніс (he carried)
  • мог-ти → міг (he could)
  • ляг-ти → ліг (he lay down)

Verbs ending in -рти also follow this zero-ending rule:

  • вмер-ти → вмер (he died)
  • тер-ти → тер (he rubbed)

3. Verbs ending in -сти/-зти:
Many verbs ending in -сти or -зти take a zero ending (e.g., нести → ніс, везти → віз). However, if their underlying root ends in a dental stop (д or т), this consonant drops out and they take the -в suffix. Note that for verbs like вести, the vowel alternation е → і applies here because the syllable becomes closed (вед-в → вев → вів):

  • вес-ти (root вед-) → вів (he led)
  • крас-ти (root крад-) → крав (he stole)
  • їс-ти (root їд-) → їв (he ate)

An important exception is рости (to grow), which drops the т but takes a zero ending and vowel alternation: ріс (he grew).

4. Verbs with -нути:
For verbs denoting a gradual process, the suffix -ну- is often dropped, resulting in a zero ending, though parallel forms exist:

  • сохнути → сох / сохнув (he dried)
  • замерзнути → замерз / замерзнув (he froze)

However, for sudden, single actions, the -ну- is always kept and takes -в:

  • стрибнути → стрибнув (he jumped)

5. Reflexive Verbs:
For verbs with the reflexive suffix, the suffix -ся is added after the masculine -в. If the masculine form has a zero ending, -ся is added directly to the final consonant:

  • митися → мився (he washed himself)
  • дивитися → дивився (he watched)
  • берегтися → берігся (he protected himself)

6. Irregular: іти (to go):
The verb іти is highly irregular in the past tense. The masculine form is ішов (or йшов). Prefixed forms follow the same pattern (e.g., знайти → знайшов, піти → пішов).

Note on Pronunciation: The final -в is pronounced like a soft English 'w' (as in 'now' or 'cow'), not like a 'v' or 'f'.

Examples (4)

  1. Я вчора весь день працював.

    I worked all day yesterday.

Word by Word: I yesterday all day worked.

A male speaker uses the masculine form 'працював' for 'I'.

  2. Мій брат приніс додому кавун.

My brother brought a watermelon home.

Word by Word: My brother brought home watermelon.

The verb 'принести' has a consonant stem, so it becomes 'приніс' with a vowel change (е to і).

  3. Він швидко ішов до зупинки.

He was walking quickly to the stop.

Word by Word: He quickly walked to stop.

The verb 'іти' is irregular in the past tense; its masculine form is 'ішов'.

  4. Максим вмився і пішов на роботу.

Maksym washed up and went to work.

Word by Word: Maksym washed-self and went to work.

For reflexive verbs, the suffix -ся remains after the masculine ending -в.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Russian suffix -л instead of the Ukrainian -в.

    Він читал книгу.
    Він читав книгу.

In Ukrainian, the masculine singular suffix is always -в (or zero), never -л.

  • Trying to add personal endings (like -у or -еш) to the past tense.

    Я працював-у.
    Я працював.

The past tense does not change for person (I, you, he). It only changes for gender. If the subject is masculine, it is always 'працював'.

  • Forgetting the vowel change (о/е to і) in consonant stems.

    Він нес подарунок.
    Він ніс подарунок.

When a consonant stem verb forms the masculine past, the 'e' or 'o' in the root usually changes to 'і'.
