Imperfective Aspect

Level 2Sounds Like nedokonanij vid

Ukrainian verbs come in pairs. The imperfective aspect (недоконаний вид) is used for ongoing actions, habits, and general statements. It is the only aspect that has a present tense.

How It Works

In Ukrainian, the imperfective aspect is used to view an action as an open-ended process. Unlike the perfective aspect, which focuses on a finished result, the imperfective is used in the following contexts:

  • Process: Actions happening right now or at a specific moment in the past/future (e.g., 'I am reading').
  • Habitual Actions: Things you do regularly, often accompanied by words like 'завжди' (always) or 'щодня' (every day).
  • General Facts: Simply naming the activity or asking if it has ever occurred (e.g., 'Have you [ever] read this book?').
  • Duration: When you specify how long an action lasted (e.g., 'for two hours').

Morphology:
Most basic, unprefixed verbs are imperfective (e.g., писати, пити). They can also be formed from perfective verbs using suffixes like -ува- or -а- (e.g., купувати).

Tense Availability:
The imperfective aspect is the only one that can be used in the present tense. In the future, it has two forms: the analytic future (буду читати) and the synthetic future (читатиму).

Examples (5)

  1. Я зараз пишу листа.

I am writing a letter right now.

Word by Word: I now write letter.

Uses the imperfective 'пишу' to show a process happening at the moment of speaking.

  2. Він завжди купував квіти по суботах.

He always bought flowers on Saturdays.

Word by Word: He always bought flowers on Saturdays.

The imperfective 'купував' indicates a repeated, habitual action in the past.

  3. Ми будемо вечеряти о сьомій.

We will be having dinner at seven.

Word by Word: We will to-have-dinner at seven.

The analytic future 'будемо вечеряти' describes a process that will be ongoing at a specific time.

  4. Я читав цю книгу дві години.

I read this book for two hours.

Word by Word: I read this book two hours.

Even though the reading session ended, the imperfective 'читав' is required because the focus is on the duration (two hours).

  5. Ви вже снідали?

    Have you had breakfast yet?

Word by Word: You already breakfasted?

The imperfective 'снідали' is used here to ask about the general fact of the activity occurring.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the perfective aspect for actions with a duration.

    Я прочитав книгу дві години.
    Я читав книгу дві години.

With a verb that finishes a result (прочитав книгу), a duration like 'two hours' needs the imperfective: Я читав книгу дві години. To say how long it took to finish, use за: Я прочитав книгу за дві години.

  • Using the perfective to say what you are doing right now.

    Different MeaningЯ напишу листа зараз.
    Я пишу листа зараз.

Я напишу листа зараз is correct, but it means 'I will write the letter right away'. Perfective verbs have no present tense: their present endings give a future meaning. To say 'I am writing the letter now', use the imperfective: Я пишу листа зараз.

  • Using the perfective aspect after phase verbs like 'start' or 'continue'.

    Я почав прочитати.
    Я почав читати.

Verbs that indicate a phase of an action (start, continue, finish) must always be followed by an imperfective infinitive.
