Feminine noun gender
Ukrainian nouns have three genders. Feminine nouns (жіночий рід) are identified by their endings in the nominative singular, most commonly -а or -я.
How It Works
In Ukrainian, feminine gender is most commonly associated with specific endings, though there are important exceptions to keep in mind:
- Endings in -а / -я: Most nouns with these endings are feminine. Examples: мама (mother), школа (school), пісня (song).
- The Neuter Trap: Be careful with nouns ending in -а or -я that are actually neuter, such as життя (life), знання (knowledge), or курча (chick).
- Masculine Professions: Some masculine nouns referring to people also end in -а/-я, such as суддя (judge) or тесля (carpenter).
- Endings in a soft sign (ь) or a consonant: A significant group of feminine nouns ends this way, such as сіль (salt), ніч (night), or любов (love). These often need to be memorized as they look like masculine nouns.
When using a feminine noun, you must ensure adjective gender agreement and feminine past tense agreement. For example: Цікава книга була тут (An interesting book was here).
Examples (4)
- Ця книга дуже цікава.
This book is very interesting.
Word by Word: This book very interesting.
The noun 'книга' ends in -а, so the adjective 'цікава' and pronoun 'ця' also take feminine endings.
- Ніч була холодна.
The night was cold.
Word by Word: Night was cold.
'Ніч' is a feminine noun ending in a hushing consonant. The past tense verb 'була' and adjective 'холодна' must be feminine.
- Моя сестра купила нову машину.
My sister bought a new car.
Word by Word: My sister bought new car.
'Сестра' and 'машина' are feminine. The verb 'купила' shows feminine past tense agreement.
- Україна — моя рідна земля.
Ukraine is my native land.
Word by Word: Ukraine — my native land.
Both 'Україна' and 'земля' are feminine nouns ending in -а and -я.
Common Mistakes
Using masculine past tense for a feminine subject.
Вона прочитав книгу.Вона прочитала книгу.In the past tense, the verb must agree with the gender of the subject. For feminine subjects, the ending is -ла.
Assuming all nouns ending in -а are feminine.
Моя Микола прийшла.Мій Микола прийшов.Some masculine names like Микола end in -а, but they still require masculine agreement (мій, прийшов).
Treating feminine nouns ending in a consonant as masculine.
Цей ніч був довгий.Ця ніч була довга.Nouns like 'ніч' (night) or 'сіль' (salt) are feminine despite ending in a consonant. You must memorize their gender to use correct agreement.
