Possession with У Мене Є

Level 1Sounds Like u mene ê

The construction у мене є (literally 'at me there is') is the most common way to say 'I have' in Ukrainian. It focuses on the existence of the object in your possession.

How It Works

In Ukrainian, possession is often viewed as an object 'existing at' a person. This pattern is the neutral, everyday standard for physical possession.

1. The Components:

  • У/В: The preposition meaning 'at'. Use у/в based on euphony (flow of sound).
  • Possessor: The person who has the item must be in the Genitive Case.
  • є: The verb 'to be' (is/are). While Ukrainian uses this to emphasize existence, it is typically omitted when describing attributes, body parts, illnesses, or when an adjective is the focus of the sentence (e.g., У неї блакитні очі — She has blue eyes).
  • Object: The thing being possessed is the grammatical subject and stays in the Nominative Case.

2. Pronoun Changes:
When using pronouns with the preposition у/в, they change to the Genitive case:

  • я → у мене (I have)
  • ти → у тебе (you have, informal)
  • ми → у нас (we have)
  • ви → у вас (you have, formal/plural)

For third-person pronouns, an extra н is added to the start of the pronoun after the preposition:

  • його → у нього (he has)
  • її → у неї (she has)
  • їх → у них (they have)

3. Nouns and Names as Possessors:
Regular nouns and names also change to the Genitive case when they are the possessor. For example:

  • У брата є... (The brother has...)
  • В Анни є... (Anna has...)

4. Asking Questions:
To ask a question (e.g., 'Do you have...?'), use the exact same structure with rising intonation. Ukrainian does not use auxiliary verbs like 'do' or 'does'. For example: У тебе є питання? (Do you have a question?).

5. Negation:
To say you do not have something, replace є with немає (or the shorter нема). Crucially, the object then changes from the Nominative to the Genitive case. For example: У мене немає грошей (I don't have money).

6. Past and Future:
To talk about possession in other times, є changes to match the tense:

7. Alternative: The verb 'мати':
While the у мене є pattern is the default for concrete physical possession, Ukrainian also frequently uses the verb мати (to have). Unlike у мене є, мати requires the Accusative Case for the object (e.g., Я маю машину). Crucially, мати is mandatory for fixed idioms (like мати рацію — to be right, or мати на увазі — to mean/keep in mind) and is heavily preferred for abstract concepts or in formal and written registers. Additionally, мати + infinitive expresses obligation ('to have to'), e.g., Я маю працювати.

Examples (6)

  1. У мене є брат.

    I have a brother.

Word by Word: At me is brother.

'Мене' is the genitive of 'я' (I), and 'брат' is the nominative subject.

  2. В Олени є новий телефон.

    Olena has a new phone.

Word by Word: At Olena is new phone.

Notice the use of 'В' instead of 'У' before a vowel for better sound flow (euphony). 'Олени' is the genitive form of the name 'Олена'.

  3. У них є великий собака.

    They have a big dog.

Word by Word: At them is big dog.

Note the 'н' added to the pronoun 'їх' to become 'них' after the preposition.

  4. У нього є машина.

    He has a car.

Word by Word: At him is car.

The pronoun 'його' becomes 'нього' after the preposition 'у'.

  5. У нас є час.

    We have time.

Word by Word: At us is time.

'Нас' is the genitive form of 'ми' (we).

  6. У тебе є питання?

    Do you have a question?

Word by Word: At you is question?

Questions are formed using the exact same structure as statements, just with rising intonation.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Accusative case for the object.

    У мене є машину.
    У мене є машина.

In this construction, the object is the subject of the sentence, so it must be in the Nominative case, not the Accusative.

  • Forgetting the 'н-' on third-person pronouns.

    У його є кіт.
    У нього є кіт.

Third-person pronouns must take the euphonic 'н' prefix when they follow a preposition.

  • Using 'не є' for negative possession.

    У мене не є гроші.
    У мене немає грошей.

To say you 'don't have' something, you must use the special word 'немає' followed by the Genitive case.
