Synthetic Future of Imperfective Verbs

Level 3Sounds Like majbutníj sintetičnij -timu

The synthetic future is a unique Ukrainian way to say 'I will be doing' something using a single word (e.g., читатиму) instead of two (буду читати).

How It Works

The synthetic future (майбутній синтетичний час), also known in Ukrainian textbooks as the complex form (складна форма), is a signature feature of the Ukrainian language. It expresses future actions viewed as a process, habit, or ongoing state (imperfective aspect).

1. Formation and History:
Unlike the analytic future, which uses the auxiliary verb 'бути', the synthetic form attaches endings directly to the infinitive suffix -ти. Historically, these endings derive from the old Slavic verb яти/имати (to take/catch), specifically its conjugated forms иму or йму, which fused with the infinitive over time (e.g., читати йму became читатиму).

  • Я читати-му (I will read/be reading)
  • Ти читати-меш (You will read)
  • Він/Вона/Воно читати-ме (He/She/It will read)
  • Ми читати-мемо (We will read)
  • Ви читати-мете (You all will read)
  • Вони читати-муть (They will read)

2. Usage and Nuance:
Functionally, it is identical to the analytic form (буду читати). The synthetic future is a core, fully standard feature of Literary Ukrainian. While historically it has strong roots in Western and Southwestern dialects, it is universally used across Ukraine today in both spoken and written language. In daily life, both forms are used interchangeably, though the synthetic form is often preferred in literature for its compactness.

3. Spelling Rule:
The synthetic future endings contrast the vowel у in the first person singular and third person plural (-му, -муть) with е in all other forms (-меш, -ме, -мемо, -мете). The и belongs to the infinitive suffix -ти-, which remains unchanged before these endings.

4. Practical Tip:
While both forms are grammatically correct, the analytic form is often preferred for phonetically cumbersome, long infinitives (e.g., використовувати). The synthetic form (використовуватиму) can be difficult to pronounce quickly.

5. Reflexive Verbs:
When using verbs with the reflexive suffix -ся, the reflexive marker is placed after the future ending. Crucially, in the third-person singular, a -ть- is inserted before the reflexive suffix (e.g., вчитиметься). The choice between -ся and -сь after vowel endings depends on euphony rules (what the next word starts with), but -ся is mandatory after consonant endings, including the 3rd person forms (вчитимуться, вчитиметься).

6. Stress:
The stress remains on the same syllable as the original infinitive (e.g., писати → писатиму).

  1. Я працюватиму над цим проєктом весь наступний тиждень.

I will be working on this project all next week.

Word by Word: I will-work on this project all next week.

The verb 'працювати' (to work) is in the 1st person singular synthetic future.

  2. Ми часто зустрічатимемося в парку після уроків.

We will meet often in the park after classes.

Word by Word: We often will-meet-ourselves in park after lessons.

Shows the placement of the reflexive suffix '-ся' after the future ending '-мемо'.

  3. Україна завжди пам'ятатиме своїх героїв.

Ukraine will always remember its heroes.

Word by Word: Ukraine always will-remember its heroes.

The 3rd person singular form 'пам'ятатиме' is used for a continuous future state.

  4. Ви часто писатимете нам листи?

Will you write us letters often?

Word by Word: You often will-write to-us letters?

The 2nd person plural form 'писатимете' indicates a repeated future action.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the synthetic ending with perfective verbs.

    Я зробитиму це завтра.
    Я зроблю це завтра.

The -тиму endings only apply to imperfective verbs. For perfective verbs like 'зробити', you must use the perfective simple future (зроблю).

  • Dropping the -ти suffix from the infinitive.

    Я читаму книгу.
    Я читатиму книгу.

The endings must be attached to the full infinitive, including the -ти suffix. Do not remove it.

  • Incorrect placement of the reflexive suffix -ся.

    Ми вчитисямемо разом.
    Ми вчитимемося разом.

The reflexive suffix -ся must always come at the very end of the word, after the future tense ending.

Learn This First

To learn the synthetic future (-тиму), you first need to recognize the infinitive form of Ukrainian verbs.
