Synthetic Imperfective Future

The synthetic future is a unique Ukrainian way to express ongoing or repeated future actions using a single word (e.g., читатиму instead of буду читати).

How It Works

The synthetic imperfective future (синтетичний майбутній час) is a unique feature of the Ukrainian language. While it shares the same meaning as the analytic future (буду + infinitive), it is often preferred for its conciseness and rhythmic flow.

1. Formation and History:
Unlike most tenses, you do not drop the infinitive ending -ти. Historically, this form arose from the fusion of the infinitive with the old auxiliary verb йняти (яти), which meant "to take" or "to have." This is why the full infinitive is preserved before the endings:

  • Я працюватиму (I will be working)
  • Ти працюватимеш (You will be working)
  • Він/вона працюватиме (He/she will be working)
  • Ми працюватимемо (We will be working)
  • Ви працюватимете (You all will be working)
  • Вони працюватимуть (They will be working)

2. Reflexive Verbs:
When using verbs with the reflexive suffix -ся/-сь, the suffix always moves to the very end: вчитись + му = вчитимусь or вчитися + му = вчитимуся. Note that for particularly long verbs, the analytic form is often preferred to avoid overly long words.

3. Usage and Nuance:
This form focuses on the process, duration, or repetition of an action. While understood everywhere, the analytic future is more frequent in casual speech in some regions, whereas the synthetic form carries a slightly more formal or literary flavor, though it remains a standard part of the language nationwide.

Examples (4)

  1. Я працюватиму над цим проєктом весь тиждень.

I will be working on this project all week.

Word by Word: I to-work-will-I over this project all week.

Uses the synthetic form to emphasize the continuous process of working throughout the week.

  2. Ми завжди пам'ятатимемо вашу добру пораду.

We will always remember your kind advice.

Word by Word: We always to-remember-will-we your kind advice.

Shows a lasting state or habit in the future using the first-person plural ending -мемо.

  3. Чи часто ти телефонуватимеш мені з Лондона?

Will you call me often from London?

Word by Word: Whether often you to-phone-will-you me from London?

Focuses on the repetition of the action (calling often) using the second-person singular ending -меш.

  4. Вони навчатимуться в університеті наступного року.

They will be studying at the university next year.

Word by Word: They to-study-will-they-self in university next year.

Demonstrates how the reflexive suffix -ся stays at the end of the synthetic future form.

Common Mistakes

  • Attaching synthetic endings to perfective verbs.

    Я написатиму листа.
    Я напишу листа. / Я писатиму листа.

The synthetic -му form is strictly for imperfective verbs. For perfective verbs like 'написати', use the perfective simple future (напишу).

  • Dropping the infinitive suffix -ти.

    Я працюму сьогодні.
    Я працюватиму сьогодні.

You must keep the full infinitive (працювати) before adding the ending (-му).

  • Incorrect placement of the reflexive suffix -ся.

    Він вчитисяме вдома.
    Він вчитиметься вдома.

The reflexive suffix must follow the future tense ending, not the infinitive stem.

Learn This First

To learn the synthetic imperfective future, you first need to know how to form the infinitive, as the endings (-му, -меш, etc.) are added to it. You must also understand the concept of imperfective aspect, as this tense is specific to that category. Finally, knowing the analytic future helps you understand that this pattern is a stylistic alternative for expressing future actions.
