Analytic Imperfective Future

The analytic future is the most common way to talk about future processes or habits in Ukrainian. It works just like the English 'will be [doing]', using the verb бути + an infinitive.

How It Works

The Analytic Imperfective Future (аналітична форма майбутнього часу) is one of two ways to express future actions of the imperfective aspect. It focuses on the process, duration, or repetition of an action rather than a finished result.

1. Formation:
You must conjugate the auxiliary verb бути to match the subject, while the main verb stays in its infinitive form:

  • Я буду працювати (I will work/be working)
  • Ти будеш працювати (You will work)
  • Він/вона/воно буде працювати (He/she/it will work)
  • Ми будемо працювати (We will work)
  • Ви будете працювати (You all will work)
  • Вони будуть працювати (They will work)

2. Usage & Nuance:
While semantically similar to the synthetic future (e.g., працюватиму), the analytic form is often considered the neutral, default choice in modern spoken Ukrainian. Because 'буду' is a separate word, speakers sometimes use it to add logical emphasis to their intention (e.g., 'Я буду це робити!' — 'I will do it!').

3. Aspect Constraint:
This form only works with imperfective verbs. If you need to express a completed result in the future, you must use the perfective simple future instead.

Examples (5)

  1. Ми будемо співати пісні весь вечір.

We will be singing songs all evening.

Word by Word: We will sing songs all evening.

The use of 'будемо співати' emphasizes the duration of the process throughout the evening.

  2. Цілий тиждень я буду готувати вечерю для сім'ї.

I will be preparing dinner for the family for the whole week.

Word by Word: Whole week I will prepare dinner for family.

This shows a habitual or repeated action in the future using the analytic form.

  3. Вони будуть обговорювати це питання завтра.

They will be discussing this issue tomorrow.

Word by Word: They will discuss this issue tomorrow.

A neutral statement about a planned future activity viewed as a process.

  4. Ти будеш чекати на мене біля метро?

Will you be waiting for me near the metro?

Word by Word: You will wait for me near metro?

A common way to ask about a future state or ongoing action.

  5. Ви будете працювати в суботу?

Will you be working on Saturday?

Word by Word: You will work in Saturday?

Using the analytic future to ask about a scheduled process.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'буду' with a perfective verb.

    Я буду прочитати цю книгу.
    Я прочитаю цю книгу.

You cannot use 'буду' with perfective infinitives. For completed results, use the simple perfective future form.

  • Combining analytic and synthetic markers.

    Я буду читатиму.
    Я буду читати. / Я читатиму.

Choose either the analytic form (буду + infinitive) or the synthetic form (-тиму), but never both at once.

  • Using only the буду + infinitive form.

Different MeaningЯ буду писати, я буду йти, я буду їсти.
    Я писатиму, я йтиму, я їстиму.

Both futures are correct. The synthetic form (-тиму) is often shorter, so a long run of 'буду' forms can sound heavy.
