Past Tense of Бути

Level 2Sounds Like minulij čas díêslova buti

In Ukrainian, the verb 'to be' (бути) is mandatory in the past tense. Unlike the present tense where it is usually omitted, you must use the correct form based on the subject's gender and number: був (M), була (F), було (N), or були (Plural).

How It Works

The past tense of the verb бути is formed by adding specific suffixes to the stem бу-. Because Ukrainian past tense verbs evolved from participles, they function like adjectives in terms of agreement:

  • був: Masculine singular (Я був, ти був, він був)
  • була: Feminine singular (Я була, ти була, вона була)
  • було: Neuter singular (Воно було)
  • були: Plural for all genders (Ми були, ви були, вони були)

Negation:
1. Personal Negation: To negate a person's state or location, place не before the verb: Я не був (I was not), Вона не була (She was not).
2. Existential Negation: To say something didn't exist or you didn't have something, use the fixed neuter form не було followed by the genitive case. For example: У мене не було грошей (I had no money), Його не було вдома (He wasn't home).

Usage Notes:
1. Mandatory Presence: While you say Я вдома (I am at home), you MUST include the verb in the past: Я був вдома.
2. Possession (To Have): In the past tense version of у мене є, the verb бути must agree with the item possessed (the grammatical subject). For example: У мене був собака (I had a dog - masculine).
3. Predicate Case: When describing a role or profession in the past, the noun usually takes the instrumental case (e.g., Він був лікарем).
4. Impersonal Expressions: The neuter form було is used for weather or states where there is no grammatical subject: Було холодно (It was cold).

Examples (6)

  1. Я був у Києві минулого року.

I was in Kyiv last year.

Word by Word: I was in Kyiv last year.

Here, 'був' is used because the speaker is masculine. It indicates a past location.

  2. Вона була дуже щаслива.

    She was very happy.

Word by Word: She was very happy.

The feminine form 'була' agrees with the feminine subject 'вона'.

  3. Ми були вчора вдома.

    We were at home yesterday.

Word by Word: We were yesterday at-home.

The plural form 'були' is used for 'ми' (we), 'ви' (you plural), and 'вони' (they).

  4. Він був студентом.

    He was a student.

Word by Word: He was student (instrumental).

Note that 'студентом' is in the instrumental case, which is standard for predicates after 'бути' in the past.

  5. У мене не було часу.

    I didn't have time.

Word by Word: At me not was (neuter) time (genitive).

This is the existential negation. The neuter form 'не було' is used regardless of the gender of the person, and the object 'час' (time) takes the genitive case.

  6. Учора було сонячно.

    It was sunny yesterday.

Word by Word: Yesterday was (neuter) sunny.

The neuter 'було' is used for impersonal weather statements.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the nominative case instead of the genitive for existential negation.

    У мене не було час.
    У мене не було часу.

When saying something did not exist or you did not have something in the past, you must use the neuter 'не було' followed by the genitive case.

  • Omitting the verb in the past tense.

    Я вчора вдома.
    Я вчора був вдома.

In the present tense, the verb 'to be' is usually omitted (zero copula), but in the past tense, it is mandatory.

  • Using the masculine past form when the speaker is a woman.

    Different MeaningЯ був там.
    Я була там.

'Я був там' is correct for a man. A woman says 'Я була там': the verb must match the gender of the person speaking when using 'я' or 'ти'.
