In Ukrainian, the Perfective Simple Future is formed by taking a perfective verb and adding standard present-tense endings. It describes a single, completed action that will happen in the future.

How It Works

The Perfective Simple Future (проста форма майбутнього часу) is the most common way to express future intentions that focus on a result.

1. Formation:
You must start with a perfective verb (often created via prefixes). You then apply the same endings used for the present tense:

  • я: -у / -ю
  • ти: -еш / -єш / -иш / -їш
  • він/вона: -е / -є / -ить / -їть
  • ми: -емо / -ємо / -имо / -їмо
  • ви: -ете / -єте / -ите / -їте
  • вони: -уть / -ють / -ать / -ять

2. Meaning and Nuance:
This form is used when the speaker cares about the completion of the act. For example, я напишу means 'I will finish writing' or 'I will have the letter written.'

3. Usage in Subordinate Clauses:
In Ukrainian, you must use the future tense after якщо (if) or коли (when) if the action refers to the future. English often uses the present tense here ('When I finish...'), but Ukrainian requires the future (Коли я закінчу...).

4. Stem Changes:
Watch out for consonant mutations in the first-person singular (я), such as сказати (to say) becoming я скажу.

Examples (5)

  1. Я зроблю це завтра.

    I will do it tomorrow.

Word by Word: I will-do (perfective) this tomorrow.

The perfective verb 'зробити' is conjugated in the first person to show the task will be completed.

  2. Ми обов'язково зустрінемося наступного тижня.

We will definitely meet next week.

Word by Word: We definitely will-meet (perfective) next week.

Uses the perfective 'зустрітися' to indicate a specific, one-time meeting event.

  3. Коли ти прочитаєш цю книгу?

When will you finish reading this book?

Word by Word: When you will-read (perfective) this book?

The perfective 'прочитати' focuses on the result of finishing the entire book.

  4. Якщо він прийде, ми почнемо вечерю.

If he comes, we will start dinner.

Word by Word: If he will-come (perfective), we will-start (perfective) dinner.

In Ukrainian, both the condition and the result use the future tense.

  5. Вона напише листа ввечері.

She will write the letter in the evening.

Word by Word: She will-write (perfective) letter in-evening.

The focus is on the completed letter being ready by the end of the evening.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'буду' with a perfective verb.

    Я буду написати листа.
    Я напишу листа.

The auxiliary 'буду' can only be used with imperfective verbs. Perfective verbs are conjugated directly to form the future.

  • Using the simple future for repeated or habitual actions.

    Я прочитаю газету щодня.
    Я буду читати газету щодня.

Perfective verbs denote a single completed result. For habits or processes, use the imperfective future.
