The person who feels it takes -ला (मला, तिला, त्याला), and वाटणे stays in the neuter.

How It Works

-ल्यासारखे वाटणे describes a feeling that matches a situation, true or not. It is built in two steps.

Write सारखे joined to the stem, as in आल्यासारखे. A space before सारखे is a spelling error.

वाटणे works with the person who feels, who takes -ला: मला, तिला, त्याला, त्यांना. In this pattern the verb is neuter and does not agree with that person: तिला स्वप्नात असल्यासारखे वाटत होते.

Use असल्यासारखे to say that you feel as if you are somewhere or in some state. Use a past stem such as आल्या to say that you feel as if something has already happened.

For a negative feeling, put नाही after वाटत: ही गोष्ट आधी ऐकल्यासारखे वाटत नाही. A notice can also use the pattern: ताप आल्यासारखे वाटत असेल, तर विश्रांती घ्यावी.

    आल्यासारखे वाटले says it felt as if I had come home; मला names who feels it.

    असल्यासारखे describes a state, and वाटत होते is the past progressive.

  3. त्याला कोणीतरी पाहत असल्यासारखे वाटले.

    He felt as if someone were watching him.

    The -त असल्यासारखे form gives the feeling of an action going on.

  4. मला ही गोष्ट आधी ऐकल्यासारखे वाटते.

    This story feels as if I have heard it before.

    ऐकल्यासारखे वाटते is the present of the same pattern.

  5. ताप आल्यासारखे वाटत असेल, तर विश्रांती घ्यावी.

    If you feel feverish, rest.

    A notice uses आल्यासारखे वाटत असेल inside a जर … तर sentence.

Common Mistakes

  • Splitting सारखे from the verb stem.

    घरी आल्या सारखे वाटले.
    घरी आल्यासारखे वाटले.

    सारखे joins the stem and is written as one word.

  • Using मी with वाटणे.

    मी घरी आल्यासारखे वाटले.
    मला घरी आल्यासारखे वाटले.

    वाटणे takes the person who feels it with -ला, so मी becomes मला.
