मुले is a neuter plural, so its verb ends in -ली, even when the children are boys.

With आम्ही the verb has one form for men and women, so a group of women also says आम्ही आलो.

A respectful plural also takes the plural verb: आजी आल्या and बाबा आले.

These forms use no -ने, because the verb has no object.

Time words such as काल (yesterday), आज (today) and आत्ता (just now) often go with the past: ती आत्ता आली. The past stems आ- (from येणे) and गे- (from जाणे) look different from the dictionary form, so learn them as they come.

Examples (5)

  1. तो काल घरी आला.

    He came home yesterday.

    आला matches the man तो.

  2. ती आज लवकर आली.

    She came early today.

    आली matches the woman ती.

  3. मी काल शाळेत गेलो.

I went to school yesterday. A man is speaking.

गेलो shows a man is speaking.

  4. मी काल बाजारात गेले.

I went to the market yesterday. A woman is speaking.

गेले shows a woman is speaking.

  5. मुले शाळेत गेली.

    The children went to school.

मुले is neuter and plural, so the verb ends in -ली.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the man's form for a woman.

    ती काल घरी आला.
    ती काल घरी आली.

ती is a woman, so the verb ends in -ली.

  • Using -ले for a neuter plural noun.

    मुले शाळेत गेले.
    मुले शाळेत गेली.

मुले is a neuter plural, so the verb ends in -ली.
