How It Works

GenderOneMore
masculineमुलगा, आंबामुलगे, आंबे
masculine, ends in a consonantदिवसदिवस
feminineमुलगी, गाडी, खोलीमुली, गाड्या, खोल्या
feminine, ends in -ाशाळाशाळा
neuterपुस्तक, घर, फूलपुस्तके, घरे, फुले

Some words shorten a long vowel in the plural: फूल becomes फुले and मूल becomes मुले.

Words that go with the noun change too. हा becomes हे for masculine plurals (हे आंबे), and हे becomes ही for neuter plurals (ही पुस्तके). The verb आहे becomes आहेत.

Learn the plural together with each new noun, and note its gender.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving the noun in the singular after a number.

    दोन मुलगा आहेत.
    दोन मुलगे आहेत.

A number above one needs the plural, so मुलगा becomes मुलगे.

  • Leaving a neuter noun unchanged in the plural.

    ही पुस्तक छान आहेत.
    ही पुस्तके छान आहेत.

A neuter noun that ends in a consonant adds -े in the plural: पुस्तक becomes पुस्तके.
