-ल्यावर

After an Action

Level 3Sounds Like lyāvara

The -ल्यावर verb stays the same for every gender and number.

How It Works

-ल्यावर puts one event before another. The event with -ल्यावर comes first.

VerbWith -ल्यावर
जेवणेजेवल्यावर
येणेआल्यावर
थांबणेथांबल्यावर
सांगणेसांगितल्यावर

The ending never changes, and it is written joined to the verb: जेवल्यावर.

The two clauses may have different subjects: ती घरी आल्यावर मी चहा केला. (I made tea after she came home.) The first clause names who did the first thing.

The main verb may be in any tense, and it can be a command: जेवल्यावर हात धुवा.

The verb can also be होणे: उशीर झाल्यावर मला कळले. (I realised once it was late.)

It also works in a question: शाळा संपल्यावर तू काय करतोस? (What do you do after school ends?)

Compare with -ऊन. जेवून झोपले has one subject for both actions. -ल्यावर allows a new subject and stresses the order.
